ENTRANCE HALL
"A. GEMELLI" UNIVERSITY GENERAL HOSPITAL - ROME
The original entrance of the University General Hospital "A. Gemelli" was basically made up of a ramp that took you from the outside to a vast corridor on the fourth floor adjacent to an external lowered courtyard. (The roof covering of the Radiology Unit)
The new hospital features obliged us to re-design the entrance.
The solution regarding distribution was found by enlarging the corridor area on part of the internal courtyard and connecting it to the third, fourth and fifth floor, thus creating on a triple volume a vast reception Hall. The new architectural structure is in steel and glass and is completely transparent.
Within the volume we managed to obtain the connecting staircase to the third floor and the vertical connections to the fifth floor.
The floor of the Hall appears to develop on more levels, highlighted by a fountain/waterfall that originates from the fourth floor; it widens into a large pool on the intermediate floor between the fourth and the third and finishes on the third floor.
Particular emphasis was given to the ramp for the disabled which connects the fourth floor to the fifth. This suspended ramp with covering tie beams becomes an "architectural promenade" inside the Hall. The new volume has become the central junction for the distribution to the various floors, it has given major rationality to escape routes, but above all it has become the social core of the hospital also by hosting cultural and musical events.
In the remaining part of the old courtyard a chapel has been built on two levels which adds furthermore reasons for social gatherings.
