BRIDGE
"A. GEMELLI" UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL - ROME
This attractive bridge came about from the necessity to facilitate the connection between the Hospital and the functional complex which hosts the Infectious Diseases Institute and the Geriatric Department of the University. The bridge is 96 meters long and morphologically recalls airport tunnels.
The state of the ground and the practicability, determined the choice of the principal supporting systems that strongly characterize the bridge.
The central pillar is 30 meters high and totally built in Corten steel as is the entire supporting structure. This type of steel has the characteristic of oxidizing rapidly and in time will not undergo further deterioration. This means reducing maintenance, and avoiding problems concerned with such maintenance considering that it is at a considerable height from the ground. The main body is built with aluminium panels and glass.
